Beavers Hold On To Defeat Houston, 2-1
February 27, 2026 | Baseball
FRISCO, Texas – Dax Whitney struck out 11 and Jacob Krieg and Adam Haight drove in runs in the fourth inning to send 19th-ranked Oregon State to a 2-1 win over Houston Friday at Riders Field.
Whitney followed up his 17 strikeout performance from a week ago with 11 against the Cougars, doing so in a six-inning outing. He faced 23 batters, scattering a first-inning run with three hits and two walks.
The righty, who got his first win of the season, has 34 strikeouts in 18 innings of work this season. He has scattered just 10 hits and six walks over his first three outings of the season.
Houston got on the board with a pair of first-inning doubles. McClane Helton led the game off with a double and scored when Riley Jackson found the gap in right. That, however, was all the offense the Cougars (6-3) could muster against an Oregon State staff that featured Whitney and three relievers.
The Beavers were held scoreless for three innings by Houston starter Chris Scinta. But Oregon State (5-3) mustered up a two-run fourth inning. Nyan Hayes took second on a Houston error on a pickoff, then scored from second when Krieg hit a soft single to the right side of the infield. Krieg scored later in the inning on a sharp single to left by Haight.
Haight and Paul Vazquez each had two hits for the Beavers.
The Cougars rallied in the ninth, loading the bases with one down before Albert Roblez came on in relief. He got an infield fly for the second out of the inning, and ended the game with the Beavers' 14th strikeout of the day. It was his third save of the season.
Oregon State continues action in Frisco Saturday when the Beavers take on Alabama. First pitch at Riders Field is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT (4 p.m. in Texas). Catch the game live on the Beaver Sports Network and watch.d1baseball.com.
