Shuler Breaks Steals Record in Exhilarating OT Victory
January 22, 2026 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. ā Thursday night's battle between pregame WCC co-leaders and future Pac-12 Conference opponents Oregon State and Gonzaga delivered on every bit of its promise in a 92-87 overtime victory for the Beavers.
Ā
The win was the latest chapter in what is becoming an epic Pacific Northwest rivalry with three of the past four games going to overtime. The only non-overtime game between the teams was decided by two points.
Ā
"It's a bummer that anybody had to lose. Really thankful that we won and we are so blessed by Beaver Nation because that was an incredible environment to be part of," Oregon State coach Scott Rueck said. "These guys [Gonzaga] were too good. You know they were going to throw punches back when we threw them. This was an epic game and an amazing shot to force overtime."
Ā
Kennedie Shuler tied the single-game school record for steals with 10, equaling the effort from Juli Coleman in 1983. She missed a triple-double by literal centimeters when a three-pointer rimmed out in overtime but finished with 17 points, 10 steals, nine assists, five rebounds and three blocks.
Ā
The Zags forced overtime with an incredible shot as Paige Lofing entered the game and drilled a triple from well outside NBA range, sending the game to OT tied at 79. Shuler fouled out early in the extra period, but the Beavs persevered without their floor general and got seven big free throws from Jenna Villa and two from Ally Schimel to earn the win.
Ā
The seven freebies in OT were part of Villa's second 30-point game of the season. The junior finished with 31 - 24 in the second half - to go with six rebounds. She made 6-of-9 shots from the floor and 4-of-5 from three to go with 15 free throws, the most since Brina Chaney in 2004.
Ā
Schimel put in game-defining effort on both ends. The sophomore hounded Gonzaga's best three-point shooter and second-leading scorer Allie Turner for almost all 45 minutes of Thursday's game, holding her to 5 points and one triple. Turner averages 15 points per game and shoots 47 percent from three. Schimel pitched in 15 points with four assists on the offensive end.
Ā
Tiara Bolden scored 14 points. The senior was the Beavers' engine on offense in the first quarter, scoring 10 points with two three-pointers to held OSU lead 23-20 after one. She also made the only field goal of overtime for OSU, getting to the rack for two crucial points to set up her teammates' freebies.
Ā
Lizzy Williamson was the unsung hero for the Beavers. She finished a team-high +16, while pulling down 11 of OSU's 32 rebounds ā 5 of 11 offensive boards - and provided two steals. Williamson spent most of the game contending with Lauren Whittaker amid a 37-point effort for the Zag freshman. Fellow Aussie Katelyn Field added five points and was +8 in big minutes down the stretch.
Ā
Oregon State shot 49.2 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from three. The Beavers made 70.6 percent of their 34 free throw attempts.
Ā
The Beavs get a well-deserved bye on Saturday before hosting San Diego (Thursday, 6 p.m.) and San Francisco (Saturday, 1 p.m.) for alumni weekend. OSU will honor its 2016 Final Four team during Saturday's game.
