HONOLULU – The Oregon State volleyball team fell to Hawaii in five sets (25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 23-25, 10-15) on Friday night to close the Outrigger Invitational in Honolulu.
Three in double-figures - Lauren Rumel (16), Zaria Thornton (15) and Vivian Light (11) - led the Beavers' (1-6) offense in kills while Emma Lilo dished 34 assists and Yasemin Narlioglu led the defense with 17 digs. Light coupled her 11 kills with 16 digs to complete her second double-double of the season.
Thornton's 15 kills marked a new career-best for the freshman, surpassing it by five.
In a first set that saw 11 ties and three lead changes, Oregon State pulled away late as they took control at 18 apiece and ran with a 7-2 run to close it. Alara Doganyuz's key service ace gave the Beavers the 1-0 lead. Oregon State hit at a .500 percentage with Light leading the charge with five kills in the frame and Lilo dishing nine helpers. Narlioglu set her big night up with three digs to keep the Rainbow Wahine at bay.
Oregon State's defense stepped up in the second set to push the hosts. 13 digs from the Beavers held the Rainbow Wahine to just a .029 clip as the Beavers claimed a 25-18 second set win. On the other side of the ball, Thornton and Rumel combined for nine of the Beavers' dozen kills in the frame. Lilo quickly made it another double-digit assist night when she added eight more helpers.
The hosts broke through in the third set when they held Oregon State to a .184 hitting mark as the Rainbow Wahine took a three-point win at 25-22. In a set that saw five ties and four lead changes, Hawaii took charge for the last change – down 18-16- took a lead and never looked back.
A 4-0 run by the Rainbow Wahine proved to be the difference in the match being sent to five as Hawaii took the fourth by a 25-23 margin. As Hawaii clinged to a 14-13 lead, they took advantage of a Doganyuz miscue, kills and a block to flip the momentum. Oregon State showed signs of life late, battling in four set points but ultimately falling at the fourth.
Taking charge after deadlocked at 2, Hawaii took control to seal the match. Down by as many as five, Oregon State closed it to as few as two before pulling away for the final five.
The Beavers will return to Gill Coliseum for the home opener this coming Tuesday, Sept. 17 against Washington. First serve against the Huskies is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
