June 13, 2023 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State Athletics Hall of Famer and All-American Charles "Charlie" White has passed away at the age of 85.
White played for the Beavers during the 1964-65 and 1965-66 seasons, earning Converse All-America and All-AAWU First Team honors in 1966. He averaged 10.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest during his tenure at Oregon State.
A 6-foot-4 forward from Michigan, White was part of the OSU squad that ended UCLA's long streak of conference championships, claiming the AAWU title in 1966. That season, the Beavers led the nation in scoring defense.
Prior to his time at Oregon State, White played at Monterey Peninsula College in California. During his two years at Monterey, White was recruited by OSU basketball coaches Slats Gill and Paul Valenti, and in 1964 he made the decision to transfer to Oregon State. In so doing, he became the first African American player recruited on scholarship to OSU, and only the second ever in the history of the program.
Before enrolling at Monterey, White served four years in the United States Army.
White was inducted into the OSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991 and was named to the Pac-12 Hall of Honor in 2011. The 1965-66 Oregon State men's basketball team was also inducted into both the OSU Athletics Hall of Fame and the State of Oregon Hall of Fame.
A memorial service for White will be held in Detroit, Mich.
