Hammoude Ties HR Mark on Thursday Against Bruins
April 06, 2023 | Softball
LOS ANGELES -- Oregon State dropped the series opener to third-ranked UCLA by a 6-2 margin on Thursday evening. Â
Frankie Hammoude – with her ninth home run of the season – tied the program's home run record for a career with 52. She matched Tarrah Beyster's mark that was set from 1997-2000.
The Bruins plated all six of their runs in a two-inning span: back-to-back three-run frames gave them the lead that the Beavers could only chip away from by the fourth.
With two away in the sixth after a Grace Messmer fielder's choice, Hammoude slugged a home run to center on a full count for the first runs of the game. Kaiea Higa and Morgan Howey roped singles in the ensuing at-bats to threaten for more but couldn't make it home when a punchout ended the frame.
Messmer led the Beavers (11-21-1, 2-10-1 Pac-12) with a pair of singles while three others – Higa, Hammoude and Howey – each recorded a hit against the Bruins.
Going the full 6.0 innings, Tarni Stepto (4-10-1) was charged with the loss but struck out eight and walked six. The righty surrendered 10 hits and each run was earned. She recorded three strikeouts through the first three frames, including two in the opening inning.
Oregon State will look to even the series tomorrow with the second game of the series at 6 p.m. from Easton Stadium. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Los Angeles.
