Beavers Wallop No. 9 Washington
April 16, 2023 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- An offensive barrage was used by the Oregon State softball team as they upset ninth-ranked Washington by an 11-1 score on Sunday afternoon.
Frankie Hammoude led the Beavers with six runs batted in from a 3-for-3 day at the plate – highlighted by the first inning homer that broke the program record and batting four in in the third – to help build the sizable lead.
"Really proud of the team today," said head coach Laura Berg. "They competed in every at-bat and that's all we can ask for (as a team). I'm proud of what Ellie (Garcia) and Tarni (Stepto) did in the circle today."
The Beavers wasted little time to get the offense started as Hammoude launched the record-breaking home run to center after Abby Doerr saw four balls go by for the leadoff walk in the home half of the first.
Washington got a run back in the third when the Huskies knocked a RBI single to the left side and halved their deficit.
OSU responded in a big way in the home half of the third with eight runs off five hits and batted around the order. Leading off the frame, Doerr roped a double to the warning track to quickly get into scoring position before Hammoude sent Doerr and Grace Messmer home to build the lead to three. Showing discipline at the dish, three Beavers – Erin Mendoza, Doerr and Messmer – all advanced freely to first by a walk or being hit by the pitch. Hammoude capped the inning with her second two-RBI knock of the frame to build the lead at 10-2 with her single to left.
Piling on the offense, Shay McDowell knocked Carson Saabye home with her single to right field for her first collegiate run batted in.
Six – Hammoude, Doerr, Messmer, Des Rivera, Mendoza and McDowell – had at least one run batted in and a trio – Hammoude, Rivera and Aubree Seaney – recorded two or more hits on the afternoon.
Ellie Garcia and Tarni Stepto split the duties in the circle against the Huskies, with Garcia recording the win. The Chino, California, native allowed the one run in three frames and struck out two. Stepto had four punchouts and walked one in two innings' worth of work.
Oregon State (12-25-1, 3-14-1 Pac-12) will have a bye week ahead of a three-game series at Arizona to end the April slate. Â
