Freshmen Showcase Potential in Defeat
February 05, 2023 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Colorado jumped out to a big early lead and maintained through multiple Beaver runs to hand Oregon State a 67-48 defeat in Gill Coliseum.
Â
Timea Gardiner led the Beavers with 13 points along with six rebounds and a steal. Adlee Blacklock neared her career-high with nine points on a 3-for-4 day from beyond the arc. Raegan Beers pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points.
Â
The Beavers again got off to a slow start, struggling to score against a physical Colorado team that contested every shot. OSU made just 2-of-9 shots in the opening period, which closed with the Buffaloes leading 21-6. Blacklock was the quarter's bright spot, splashing a three to try and chip away at the lead.
Â
The second quarter was a defensive battle early on with just three points scored in the first 3:25. The two teams combined to shoot 1-for-9 in the first few minutes.
Â
The Beavs picked up some momentum midway through the second as a group comprised of five freshman keyed a late run. Gardiner, Blacklock and Lily Hansford combined on an 8-0 run to make it 28-14. Gardiner and Martha Pietsch combined for four more to end the half as OSU entered the break trailing 35-20.
Â
The youth movement was strong again in the third quarter with freshmen scoring 11 of Oregon State's 13 points in the period. Beers pulled down six rebounds to go with four points while Gardiner tied for the team lead with four.
Â
The two teams battled to a draw in the fourth quarter as Colorado completed its victory. Bendu Yeaney scored four points in the period while getting to the basket often, and Oregon State forced four late turnovers including two shot clock violations.
Â
The Beavers head to Los Angeles next. OSU takes on UCLA on Friday, Feb. 10 at 5 p.m. The game is slated to be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
