
Bruins Pull Away Late to Defeat Beavers

LOS ANGELES – Oregon State led going into the fourth quarter, but turnovers allowed no. 18 UCLA to get back in front in a 62-54 loss on the road.

The Beavers got a sterling effort from Bendu Yeaney who led the team with 11 points, dished five assists, blocked two shots and recorded a steal. Jelena Mitrovic finished with eight points to go with 10 rebounds and a block.

The first quarter was a defensive battle with both teams holding the other to around 30 percent from the floor. The Bruins led 10-8 thanks to better rebounding, but the Beavs held UCLA to 25 percent shooting in the period to stay in the game.

Talia von Oelhoffen got the offense going to open the second, splashing the games first three on the 15th attempt between the two teams. Adlee Blacklock followed with one of her own to make it 16-14 in favor of UCLA.

The highlight of the quarter for the Beavs was an 8-0 run late in the period. Noelle Mannen keyed the Beavers' moving into the lead with five straight points that helped put OSU up 27-25. UCLA countered with a 6-2 spurt to end the half and led 31-29 at the break.

Oregon State appeared to take control of the game in the third quarter. Mannen and Mitrovic helped the Beavs open the second half with a five point lead. Mannen splashed a three to open the scoring before back-to-back baskets from Mitrovic finished the 7-0 run with OSU in front 36-31. The Beavers stretched the lead out as much as seven, but a 4-0 spurt late in the period allowed the Bruins to close to 47-44 after three.

After trading baskets to open the fourth quarter, UCLA made its move. The Bruins reeled off nine straight points including six in a row on the fast break. The run forced an Oregon State timeout with 4:34 left and the hosts leading 55-51. From there, the Bruins traded baskets with OSU and closed out the game.
