
Oregon State Falls in Series Opener to 17th-Ranked UCLA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Oregon State women's volleyball team fell in the series opener in three-straight sets to No. 17 UCLA on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins took the first set 25-15, set two 25-22, and third set 25-16.

An early 7-1 lead for UCLA forced a timeout by the Beavers. Oregon State drew to within five, 8-3, taking two of the next three points out of the timeout. Behind a 6-1 run, the Bruins opened their lead up to 14-4 and forced OSU to use its second timeout of the set.

Mychael Vernon registered a kill out of the timeout to ignite a 3-1 Beaver run and make the score 15-7 in favor of UCLA. A block by Aliyah McDonald and Anastasija Svetnik began a 4-0 Oregon State run, drawing them within seven, 18-11. UCLA was able to hang on to get the 25-15 opening set win.

It was a fight in set two that began with an early shootout with the teams drawing even at 8-8 before UCLA called its first timeout following a 4-0 OSU run that was capped by a Vernon kill.

The Bruins responded with a 4-1 run after the timeout, tying the game at 12 all. Once again, points were traded back-and-forth as the Beavers took a 17-16 lead after a Kateryna Tkachenko kill and solo Lindsey Schell block.

As Oregon State led 21-19 late, UCLA closed the set on a 6-1 run to go up 2-0 in the match after claiming the 25-22 set two victory.

Set three saw blows being traded early on as the Bruins opened the set with an 8-5 advantage. Off a 3-0 run, OSU tied the set at 8-8. After UCLA went ahead 10-9, the next eight points were split before the Beavers called a timeout while trailing 16-13.

The Bruins grew their lead with a 3-0 run out of the timeout and eventually went on for the 25-16 win and match sweep.
