Houston, Texas – Oregon State wins both games on the second day of the Houston Classic at the Cougar Softball Stadium after defeating Dayton, 3-1, in the morning and run-ruling Houston, 8-0, in five innings on Saturday night.
Mariah Mazon picked up her second no-hitter of the season with seven strikeouts in her shutout victory against Houston.
Vs. Dayton
A double play in the top of the sixth inning sparked an Oregon State comeback against Dayton in the morning game.
Senior Trystan Melancon got the start in the circle. She struck out three-of-the-four batters she faced in the first inning.
The Beaver offense looked like it was going to strike early with freshman Xiao Gin getting a leadoff walk and making it around the third before junior Mariah Mazon joined her on base with a walk. Despite OSU's getting the runners on second and third, they both would be stranded.
In the second inning, Melancon pitched another stellar inning striking out two batters faced. She picked up her sixth strikeout in the top half of the third.
Dayton struck first in the fourth after the leadoff batter was walked and advanced to second off a passed ball. The third batter of the inning hit a double into left center to score leadoff before OSU was able to pick up the final out of the inning.
In the sixth, it looked like the Flyers would score again with runners on second and third with one out. OSU's young infield stepped up to the plate to give the Beavers momentum with freshman Grace Messmer fielding a ground ball at shortstop and going home with the throw, rather than to first base. Catcher Val Pero made the easy tag at the plate and threw the ball down to Maia Rader at third who got the tag on the runner rounding third to complete the double play.
In the bottom of the inning, Messmer drew a walk to put an early runner on. Missy Nunes followed it with a single that dropped into shallow center field to put two on with no outs. Mazon was walked to load the bases with no outs as senior Fallon Molnar stepped to the plate to pinch hit. Molnar singled to the shortstop as Messmer scored. Head coach Laura Berg signaled Nunes to head home as well and was awarded the plate and scored off obstruction by Dayton's catcher giving the Beavers a 2-1 lead.
With two on and no outs, junior Morgan Allen reloaded the bases after catcher's interference. Rader reached on a fielder's choice to keep the bases loaded as Mazon's pinch runner, Karla Calderon, was called out at home. Junior Chance Burden would pick up her first RBI of the season as she was walked bringing in the Beaver's final run of the inning.
Mazon stepped in to pitch the top half of the seven inning and struck out the side to pick up her second save of the season and help OSU to the 3-1 victory.
Melancon finished with seven strikeouts through 6.0 inning pitched and facing 24 batters.
Vs. Houston
Oregon State hit the ground running the moment the first pitch was thrown in the second game of the night as Gin opened with a walk. She advanced to second on a wild pitch before Nunes popped one into shallow left field for a base hit advancing Gin to third. Mazon hit a RBI single up the middle to put two runners on as Molnar stepped to the plate in her first career start as a Beaver.
Molnar hit a single into the gap between the shortstop and third baseman to load the bases. Allen reached on a fielder's as Molnar is out as second and Nunes crosses home to give OSU a 2-0 lead. With runners on the corners, Rylee Maston stepped to the plate and blasted her first career homer in the Orange and Black to tack on three more runs. OSU would end the inning shortly after taking the early 5-0 lead.
Mazon got the start in the circle for Oregon State and picked up two strikeouts in the first inning.
In the second, the top of OSU's lineup continued to be productive beginning with Messmer being walked to start the inning. Nunes followed with a single into center field advancing Messmer to second. Mazon picked up another RBI as she singles down the first-base line scoring Messmer. Beavers would lead 6-0 after the second.
Oregon State turned the second double play of the day in the bottom of the third inning after Mazon fielded a bouncer while in the circle and turns to make the throw to Messmer at second. Messmer catches it and quickly gets the throw off to Allen for the second out.
OSU used that momentum in the top of the fourth as Messmer led-off with a single up the middle. Molnar stepped up two batters later for a two-out, two-run homer over the left-field fence extending the Beaver's lead to 8-0 after the fourth.
Mazon picked up her fourth victory on the season as the Beavers run-ruled Houston in five innings throwing only 69 pitches and facing 16 batters.
