Team Black Sweeps in the Orange & Black Scrimmage
August 23, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team played in front of fans for the first time as the squad prepares for the 2019 season, Friday evening in the annual Orange & Black Scrimmage. Several hundred fans were on hand to get a first impression of this year's squad, while five newcomers were able to get their first taste of playing in front of Beaver Nation.
Team Black won all three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-19.
Despite the sweep, it was closely contested throughout the match.
Fourth-year head coach Mark Barnard was the satisfied with the result, choosing to assess from the sidelines while associate head coach Ron Zwerver and assistant coach Jessica Quinn directed the squads.
"Overall I thought there was some really good stuff out there and we had a really good crowd," Barnard said. "We have implemented a lot these last two weeks and tonight we executed a lot of that. We've made an effort to improve our back row attack and we delivered that tonight."
"Haylie Bennett's play really stood out tonight. That was the best she's been this fall. She attacked well. She blocked well. She was just very good," Barnard said.
"I thought Grace Massey was solid and steady passing as usual. She just digs the ball well."
Barnard also noted the play of freshman Cecilee Max-Brown saying, "Cecilee had some great phases and continues to show us that she should be in the mix as a potential starter."
While there was a bit of shuffling between teams, members of Team Black included seniors Makenna Browne, Serena Bruin, Kory Cheshire and Amy Underdown, junior Haylie Bennett, sophomores Chloe Brown and Maddie Sheehan and freshman Taylor Quinn. Team Orange consisted of seniors Shekinah Clarke and Montanna Gubrud, juniors Maddie Goings and Grace Massey, sophomore Lindsey Schell, redshirt freshman Nya Buckner and true freshmen Mary Kate Lopez, Cecilee Max-Brown and Amya Small.
The Beavers open the season next Friday when they participate in the Oregon Classic in Eugene. OSU will take on UC Irvine at 11 a.m. and Boston College at 5 p.m. with both matches taking place at Matthew Knight Arena.
OSU returns to Gill Coliseum Thursday, Sept. 26 at 5:30 p.m. to take on Oregon in Beavers' conference opener. Oregon State then hosts Colorado the following night, Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m.
