Beavers Hang On For 81-76 Win Over Portland State
December 01, 2019 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Tres Tinkle had 26 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead Oregon State to an 81-76 win over a scrappy Portland State team on Sunday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
Â
With the win, the Beavers improved to 7-1 and equaled their best start since the 1980-81 Orange Express squad opened 26-0. The 1984-85 and 1986-87 Oregon State teams also started 7-1.
Â
It was the fifth straight victory for the Beavers, who have defeated Portland State (3-5) in all 14 matchups between the schools.
Â
Tinkle went 8-for-15 from the field, including 5-for-7 from beyond the arc, and 5-for-5 from the free throw line for his 26 points. He also had two blocks and a steal.
Â
Ethan Thompson added 18 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Zach Reichle scored a career-high 16 points, going 6-for-8 from the field and 4-for-5 from the stripe.
Â
Sean Miller-Moore came off the bench to score a career-high seven points. Kylor Kelley blocked six shots, his eighth-consecutive game with multiple blocks to open the season.
Â
Portland State guard Holland Woods, who was limited in the first half with foul trouble, scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half.
Â
Oregon State scored the first seven points of the second half -- a 3-pointer by Tinkle and two Reichle layups -- to lead 48-34.
Â
The lead grew to as many as 19 points, but Portland State rallied and made things interesting down the stretch.
Â
Portland State closed to 80-76 on Woods' jumper with 19.7 seconds left, but Gianni Hunt made the first of two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to close the scoring.
Â
Oregon State led 41-34 at the break.
Â
Several former Oregon State hoop standouts were in attendance including 1981 consensus All-American Steve Johnson, who is the second-leading scorer in school history behind Gary Payton.
Â
The Beavers have nearly two weeks off before returning to action on Saturday, Nov. 14 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 p.m. at Gill Coliseum. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
