Beavers Fall to Sun Devils in Five on Senior Night
November 15, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Haylie Bennett tied her career-high with 22 kills and Amy Underdown registered a season-best 17 kills but it wasn't enough as the Oregon State volleyball team fell to Arizona State in five sets Friday night at Gill Coliseum. The match was OSU's Senior Night with six seniors – Makenna Browne, Serena Bruin, Kory Cheshire, Shekinah Clarke, Montanna Gubrud and Amy Underdown – being recognized in a senior ceremony prior to the match. They will play their final match in Gill Coliseum on Sunday against Arizona at 9 a.m.
The loss drops the Beavers' overall record to 9-17 overall and 3-12 in the Pac-12 Conference, while the Sun Devils improve to 14-12, 6-9. Set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 18-25 and 10-15.
"We didn't do a good job blocking at all," head coach Mark Barnard said. "There was way more good than bad. We passed well and all of our hitters were good across the board. But we just couldn't block and that one aspect of the game cost us the match."
"Haylie was very good again. Lindsey Schell started out very well but tired late and Amy (Underdown) was good on offensive most of the night and was very good passing and in serve-receive, which was great to see."
The opening set was close throughout. The Sun Devils committed back-to-back errors and Montanna Gubrud aced them to gain a 10-7 lead. The teams traded blows until ASU managed to tie the score at 15-15. Still tied at 18, OSU went on a 3-0 run fueled by a pair of Bennett kills to re-take the lead at 21-18. The Beavers went on to lock down the set, 25-21.
Oregon State looked to be on its way to a 2-0 lead in the match after using a five point burst that included a block and kill by Schell to take a 10-4 lead. The Sun Devils slowly got back into the match tying the score at 16-16. A back-and-forth game of sideouts ensued with the Beavers holding the lead three more times including at 22-21. But the Sun Devils fought on taking advantage of a couple OSU errors to win the set, 25-22, to even the match at the intermission.
Bennett, who entered the third set with nine kills, caught fire during the middle period accounting for eight kills. The Beavers built a 9-6 lead before both teams went on a series of surges leaving OSU on top at 13-12. ASU took the lead at 17-16 but Oregon State stuck with it forcing ties at 18, 19 and 20. A three point flurry including back-to-back Bennett kills gave the Beavers the lead back at 22-20. OSU held on to win the set, 25-22, and regain the lead in the match at 2-1.
With the score tied at 8-8, ASU began to push away from the Beavers opening the lead to five at 15-10. Oregon State continued to hammer away using a three point run as Schell and Bennett each converted kills to close to 19-16. But Arizona State didn't relent securing the set, 25-18, to tie the match and force a fifth set.
The Sun Devils entered the fifth with the momentum and took advantage early establishing a two-point lead they would cling to. ASU pushed the lead to 10-6 forcing an OSU timeout. The Beavers came back from the timeout using kills by Maddie Goings and Bennett to narrow the gap to 12-10 but Arizona State ticked off the last three points to take the set, 15-10, and the match.
Game Notes: Senior setter Montanna Gubrud set career-highs in assists (54), digs (20) and recorded the first two blocks of her career … Amy Underdown registered a double-double with season-highs in kills (17) and digs (19) … Lindsey Schell tallied a season-best nine kills and a team-best five blocks.
Next Up: Oregon State is back in Gill Coliseum to host Arizona Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The match, which was originally scheduled for a noon start, was moved due to a facility conflict with the Beavers' women's basketball team hosting the WNIT championship game at 1:30 p.m. Sunday's match will be OSU's final home volleyball match of the 2019 season.
