Bennett’s 23 Kills Not Enough, Beavers Fall to Wildcats

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Career-best matches by Haylie Bennett and Grace Massey weren't enough as the Oregon State volleyball team fell to Arizona in five sets Sunday morning at Gill Coliseum.
The loss drops the Beavers' overall record to 9-18 overall and 3-13 in the Pac-12 Conference, while the Wildcats improve to 14-14, 4-12. Set scores were 20-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23 and 12-15.
"Our offense was very inconsistent today and our outsides let us down which is a shame. Friday all of our outsides were on, but really none of them were consistent on the left side today. We just didn't have enough variety in the offense today" head coach Mark Barnard said. "Our blocking wasn't very good this morning either. We need to trust and use better technique and trust in that more."
The opening set was a close affair throughout with 15 ties and seven lead changes. Neither team was able to open even a two-point advantage until Bennett recorded her fourth kill to put the Beavers up 13-11. Arizona answered with a 6-1 burst to take the lead at 17-14. Consecutive kills by Bennett, Montanna Gubrud and Chloe Brown tied the score again at 17 it remained knotted at 20-20. Arizona recorded the final five points to steal the opening set, 25-20. Massey, who finished the match with a career-best 33 digs, registered 10 digs in the opening stanza.
Serena Bruin came off the bench in the second set offering a boost with a pair of early kills as Oregon State cruised to an early 6-1 lead. OSU continued to press opening the lead to 10-3. The Wildcats the gap to two at 19-17 but the Beavers never surrendered the lead securing the set, 25-20, to even the match at the intermission. Bennett registered six kills for the second straight set, totaling a dozen at the break.
The third set was another tight one with 14 ties with Arizona taking the first two-point lead at 13-11 and stretched that lead to 16-11. The Beavers responded with a 6-2 run featuring kills by Bennett, Kory Cheshire, Gubrud, and Maddie Goings and an ace by Brown. OSU continued to fight tying the score at 21-21. The teams remained tied at 23-23 but back-to-back Arizona kills gave the Wildcats the set, 25-23, and the lead at two sets to one.
Oregon State jumped to a 6-3 lead in the fourth set on back-to-back kills by Goings. The Wildcats climbed back to tie it at 12 and the teams traded sideouts until Arizona used a 4-0 run to take the lead at 19-15. A pair of kills by Goings sandwiched a couple Arizona errors to tie the score at 20-20. Tied again at 22, two blocks by Bruin and a kill by Bennett earned the Beavers the set, 25-23, to force a fifth set.
The shortened fifth set included eight ties and the game was still knotted at 9-9 when Arizona scored three in a row to go up 12-9. Despite kills by Bennett, Brown and Cheshire the Beavers couldn't overcome the deficit, losing the set, 15-12, and the match.

Next Up: The Beavers will be on the road for the final four matches of the year. Next week, they'll visit Los Angeles to take on USC on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then go back to work Sunday at 1 p.m. at UCLA.
