Weinert Scores, Beavers Fall to No. 25 Washington
October 18, 2019 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS – Redshirt sophomore McKenzie Weinert scored her eighth goal of the season, but Oregon State (9-3-2, 1-3-2) fell to No. 25 Washington (9-3-2, 5-1-0) at Lorenz Field on Friday night, 2-1.
"I'm disappointed in how we started the game," said head coach Matt Kagan. "It didn't look like the team I am used to coaching in the first half due to really low energy. Washington is a well-coached team with a great spirit about them, and they took advantage of our lack of energy and outworked us in the first half."
The first half started with McKenzie Weinert getting a shot off within the first five minutes of play. Sydney Studer followed this a minute later after she got her head on the ball off a free kick from Bridgette Skiba, but her shot was saved. Paula Leblic also got a shot off for OSU in the early part of the game.
Washington took the lead in the 23rd minute after a cross pass from the right corner found a Husky on the back side of the goal.
Sophomore Laura Galceran was inches away from leveling the score minutes later when she fired a shot from the corner of the 18-yard box that went wide right and OSU was awarded a corner. Galceran took the corner that Studer was once again able to get her head on, but the shot was wide.
The Huskies extended their lead in the 37th minute after a scramble in front of the Beaver goal allowed a Washington player to push the ball into the back of the net. Oregon State would attempt a couple more shots in the half but head into halftime trailing, 2-0.
Oregon State came out of halftime with Brianna McReynolds forcing Washington's goalkeeper to make a diving save off a shot from the left side of the field. Weinert and Studer each recorded shots in the 51st minute, but neither were on target.
Weinert put the Beavers on the board in the 58th minute after taking a shot that was blocked, fielding the ball and dribbling past a defender to fire a shot with her right foot into the lower left corner.
Studer and Weinert continued to try to level the score getting multiple shots off that the Husky keeper was forced to save. McReynolds added a very close shot attempt in the 78th minute that went high.
Oregon State kept the Huskies off the board in the second half but didn't end up tying the game as Washington won, 2-1.
"I am proud of how we came out in the second half and turned the tables," continued Kagan. "We created a lot of really good chances, unfortunately, you have to play 90 minutes to win. We played a solid 45 minutes but suffered the consequences of the first half. We need to return to the drawing board tomorrow and work on it."
The Beavers outshot Washington, 19-14. Skiba finished with six saves on the night.
Oregon State is on the road next week traveling to Arizona State on Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. PT in Tempe before facing Arizona on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. PT in Tuscon.
