Tempe, Ariz. – Freshman Abby Schwartz scores twice and redshirt sophomore McKenzie Weinert adds another as Oregon State (10-3-2, 2-3-2) defeats Arizona State (6-7-3, 0-5-2) on Thursday night in Tempe, 3-1.
Oregon State controlled a large majority of the game to finish with 14 shots while the Sun Devils only had 10.
"So proud of our athletes for coming on the road and taking care of business," said head coach Matt Kagan. "We got production from everyone and that's what it takes to win in the Pac-12 Conference."
The Beavers came out firing to start the match highlighted by senior Paula Leblic getting a shot off within the first 37 seconds of play. Leblic added another attempt in the fourth minute but neither landed on target. Freshman Brianna McReynolds added her own shot that was over the crossbar in the 15th minute.
OSU's backline limited Arizona State's looks on goal by preventing ASU to not get a shot off until the 21st minute of action.
Sophomore Sydney Studer launched a shot from 30-yards out in the 32nd minute that forced the Sun Devil's goalkeeper to save.
Oregon State took the lead in the 38th minute led by Weinert creating space and dribbling past defenders to get a shot off from the top of the box that found the lower right corner. Just over a minute later, Schwartz doubled OSU's lead after a she came away with the ball after a scrabble in the box scoring her fourth goal of the season.
Schwartz recorded one more shot in the first half before Oregon State took the 2-0 lead into halftime.
Coming back from halftime, McReynolds added a shot in the 50th minute. On the defensive side sophomore Bridgette Skiba made a crucial save for the Beavers to keep ASU on the board. OSU continued to push the tempo with Leblic and McReynolds with shot attempts in the 55th and 56th minutes.
Schwartz found the back of the net again in the 69th minute when she took the ball deep into the box on the left side. She used her left foot to punch it at the goal and it ricocheted off the crossbar into the lower half of the net giving OSU the 3-0 lead.
Arizona State scored in the 81st minute after a Sun Devil gets through the back unit and finds the far lower corner of the goal making it 3-1 in favor of the Beavers.
ASU continued the attack in the last few minutes of play to bring Skiba's save count up to three on the night including a jumping save in the 88th minute before the final minute passed and OSU finished with the 3-1 victory.
Thursday's win in the first over ASU in Tempe since OSU defeated the Sun Devils in 2011, 2-1. The victory also marks the first season OSU has won at least 10 games since 2012.
