Beavers’ Four-Match Win Streak Ends at K-State
September 07, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Oregon State volleyball team's four match win streak was snapped when the Beavers fell to Kansas State in four sets at the K-State Invitational Friday night.
Â
The Beavers' record falls to 5-2 with the loss to the Wildcats (7-1). Match scores were 25-20, 22-25, 23-25 and 22-25.
Â
"We played a lot better than we have in a couple weeks," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We played pretty well for the majority of the match. Really out of four sets, we played well for thee and a half. We just struggled to terminate the ball at times."
Â
The Beavers began the opening set slowly falling behind early 4-0, but they found their footing coming back with Lindsey Schell and Haylie Bennett combining on back-to-back blocks to tie the score at 5-5. Following a series of sideouts, the Beavers took their first lead of the match at 11-10 stretching it to a three-point lead they were able to maintain late into the set. Consecutive kills by Maddy Gravley and Lindsey Schell gave OSU a 22-18 advantage. Bennett finished the scoring with another kill as the Beavers took the opening set, 25-20.
Â
The second set was tight midway through with the score knotted at 12-12 when Oregon State went on a 6-1 run, behind a trio of Schell/Bennett combo blocks, taking an 18-13 lead. Up six at 21-15, Kansas State managed to shift the momentum and proceeded on a 10-1 to steal the set 25-22.
Â
Set three was defined by a pair of scoring runs. The Beavers trailed 11-8 until Schell, Underdown and Bennett registered kills plus a Maddie Sheehan ace put the Orange & Black on a 7-0 run to take the lead at 15-11. However, K-State answered with seven of the next eight points to regain the lead at 18-16. The Wildcats took advantage of the pendulum swing and held off the Beavers to take the third set, 25-23.
Â
Despite, the Oregon State offense struggling in the fourth set with 13 kills and 11 errors, the Beavers' defense recorded five blocks in the period to stay in the game. The Wildcats took the lead for the final time at 14-13 and opened the margin to four points at 18-14. Still the Beavers continued to fight, using back-to-back kills by Maddie Goings to close the gap to one at 23-22. Kansas State held on to win the set, and match, 25-22.
Â
"We recycled the ball well. That's a cornerstone of our team and has to be working for us to succeed. Grace (Massey) and Kayla (Ellis) did a nice job back there. Offensively, Maddie Goings was good again and Haylie Bennett has been a lot better this week. When Haylie plays this way it opens up our offense and we can be quite good."
Â
Goings registered a match-high 19 kills and Underdown turned in her second double-double of the day and fifth of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs. Massey recorded a match-high 18 digs and Lindsey Schell just missed her career-high with eight blocks.
Â
Game Notes: Maddie Goings led the Beavers' offense with 19 kills. Haylie Bennett and Amy Underdown each added 12 kills … Grace Massey posted 18 digs and Underdown registered 10 for her fifth double-double of the season … Schell finished with a team-high eight blocks while Bennett tied her career-high with seven.
Â
Next Up: Oregon State are right back on the court Saturday morning to face North Texas (3-6) at 9 a.m. PDT.
