Beavers Open Season at Iowa State Challenge

OSU Opens at Iowa State Challenge
• Oregon State opens the 2018 season this weekend when it travels to Ames, Iowa to participate in the Iowa State Challenge.
• The Beavers square off with Virginia on Friday at 2 p.m. PST to open the tournament.
• OSU has a doubleheader on Saturday beginning with a 10 a.m. PST match against Ole Miss.
• The Beavers conclude the tourney playing against the host Cyclones at 4:30 p.m. PST.
• Oregon State will be on the road for the first four weekends to begin the season (11 matches).

Against the Field
• Oregon State has an overall 0-1 all-time record against this weekend's foes. The Beavers will face Virginia and Ole Miss for the first time in program history. OSU was defeated by Iowa State in the only previous meeting, a five-set affair in 1995.
The Squad
• Oregon State welcomes six newcomers to the 2018 squad. Three are transfers - S Montanna Gubrud (Linn-Benton CC), S Allison Hughes (SMU), OH Amy Underdown (Northeastern) - and three are freshmen - OH Nya Buckner, S Maddie Sheehan and OH Kyla Waiters.
• That group joins 10 returning letterwinners, including five seniors, and MB Lindsey Schell, who used her redshirt season a year ago.
Aces
• Maddie Goings posted 321 kills as a freshman in 2017, the fifth-most by a freshman in OSU history.
• Goings also registerd 331 digs, the seventh-most by a freshman in OSU history.
• Goings' efforts earned her a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team. She was also as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after the Beavers swept the Washington schools on the road.
• Sophomore Grace Massey finished the 2017 season as the starting libero recording 277 digs during the final 15 matches (61 sets), which is an average of 4.54 d/s. Over the course of the full season, that mark would have ranked third in the Pac-12.
• Massey notched 433 digs as a freshman, second-most in OSU history for a freshman and ninth-most ever in single-season history.
• Senior Kayla Ellis ranks seventh in OSU history with 1,202 career digs. She is on pace to move into the top three on OSU's all-time list by the end of the season. She needs 40 digs to move into the top five passing Miya Malauulu (1,230) and Kristy Wing (1,241).
