Beavers Repeat in Game Two; Beat Stanford 4-1
April 14, 2018 | Softball
STANFORD, Calif. – Hope Brandner and Alysha Everett each went yard as the Beavers took the second game of a three game series against Stanford 4-1 on Saturday evening inside Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.
The Beavers improve to 23-17 overall and 6-8 in Pacific-12 Conference action. Meanwhile, Stanford drops to 22-18 overall and 2-9 in Pac-12 play.
Meehra Nelson (12-7) made her first start in over a week for the Beavers and kept the opposition scoreless through four innings.
Oregon State scored first in the game in the top of the fourth inning. Everett started off with a leadoff walk followed by a base on balls for Michelle Sass and a single from Missy Nunes loaded the bags for the Beavers. Camryn Ybarra grounded out in the next at bat, but earned an RBI as Stephanie Merwin scored putting OSU on top 1-0.
The Beavers defense made some big plays in the fourth inning to keep the Cardinal blanked. Stanford put runners on in the first two at bats of the inning, but OSU held tough keeping Stanford from crossing home.
Both teams managed runs in the fifth inning, but it was the Beavers who took control of the game following the inning. Shelby Weeks led off with a walk and advanced to second on McKenna Arriola's ground out. With two outs in the inning and a runner on second Everett hit her third home run of the year, a two-run shot to right center field.
Just like the night before, after watching the batter before her hit a homer Hope Brandner followed suit and hit one of her own. This time a towering solo shot to left field, her team-leading ninth home run of the year.
Oregon State led 4-0 after the top half of the side. Stanford scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Neither team managed any more runs, and the game ended at 4-1 for the second-straight night.
Nunes has been hot at the plate since arriving at Stanford. The freshman went 2-for-2 in game one and followed that up with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate tonight. Nelson threw 5.0 innings with three strikeouts before Nerissa Eason came in for relief. Eason went 2.0 innings with no hits and one strikeout.
