Beavers Take Series Opener at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – Missy Nunes and Hope Brandner put the Beavers up early as the Oregon State softball team won the series opener at Stanford 4-1 inside Smith Family Stadium on Friday night.
Oregon State improves to 22-17 overall and 5-8 in Pacific-12 Conference play. Meanwhile, Stanford falls to 22-17 and 2-8 in conference action.
The Beavers got the scoring started in the second inning behind Nunes' fifth home run of the year. With Camryn Ybarra safely aboard, Nunes hit a towering fly ball over the left field wall flirting with the foul line putting the Beavers up 2-0. It was the freshman's first home run since Feb. 22.
Brandner added to her team-leading home run total and the Beavers score in the top of the third inning. The freshman extended her hitting streak to six games hitting her eighth homer of the year on the second pitch of the at bat clearing the center field wall and putting Oregon State up 3-0.
Mariah Mazon started in the circle for the Beavers and struck out four batters through the first three innings.
McKenna Arriola hit her team-leading 10th double of the year in the fifth inning and scored giving the Beavers their fourth run of the game. Jessica Garcia was credited with the RBI after sending one to the warning track for her second triple of the year.
The Cardinal ended Mazon's shutout hopes in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring one run bringing the final score to 4-1.
Mazon picked up her 10th win of the season (10-10) while tossing her 13th complete game. She finished with one earned run behind five strikeouts.
Up Next
Game two of the three game series is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start on Saturday with the series finale being held Sunday at noon.
