Slocum Makes Wooden Award List

CORVALLIS – Oregon State's Destiny Slocum has been selected to the Wooden Award Preseason Watch List, the award's committee announced Tuesday.

The list is comprised of 30 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for some of college basketball's most prestigious honors, the John R. Wooden Award All American Team and Most Outstanding Player Award. The list is chosen by a preseason poll of national women's college basketball media members.

Slocum, who red-shirted last season due to NCAA transfer rules, was named WBCA National and Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and made the All-Conference Second Team in her freshman campaign with Maryland. She averaged 11.5 points, 6.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds during her time with the Terrapins.

Slocum, a digital communication arts major, shot 40.5 percent from the floor with an average of 30.9 minutes per game. She tallied 21 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, including a halftime buzzer-beater from 70-feet. Slocum made the Big Ten All-Tournament Team after averaging 15.0 points and 6.0 assists in the event. She scored in double-figures 17 times on the 2016-17 season and went over five assists on 24 occasions.

The guard was the No. 7 ranked prospect in the nation when she graduated from Mountain View High School in 2016. Slocum was a McDonald's All-American and a two-time Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year. She averaged 24.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 6.1 assists during her senior campaign at Mountain View. Slocum also played point guard for the U.S. Under-19 team, helping lead the Stars and Stripes to a gold medal at the 2015 FIBA World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Slocum will be part of an Oregon State squad that is 116-23 since the start of the 2014-15 season, the seventh-best record in the country, and has won 75 Pac-12 games over that span. The four-highest win totals in program history have all come in the last four years, and the Beavers have been ranked every week over that span.
