April 08, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
TEMPE, Ariz. – Junior McKenzie Byrd and redshirt sophomore Vanessa D'Arpino each broke school records Saturday at the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State.
Byrd's opening throw of 150-9.25 in the javelin smashed her former school record (144-3), set at the 2016 Pacific-12 Conference Championships, by more than six feet. She placed seventh overall to lead OSU's impressive contingent in that event.
And D'Arpino won her section and tied for second in the premier 200 meters in 23.82, breaking her school mark by .01 seconds. It is the second time this season she's broken the school record; she ran 23.83 at Stanford on April 1.
The Beavers unleashed three all-time top-10 throws in the javelin and placed three in the top 10 in the discus in the return to ASU for new throws coach David Dumble. He coached there for 16 seasons before coming to OSU for the 2016-17 season.
In the javelin, sophomore Kindel Bailey set a PR by nearly nine feet and took eighth with a throw of 149-8.75, the No. 2 all-time mark behind Byrd. Freshman Lindsay McShane took 12th in 135-2.75, the No. 7 all-time mark and a PR by nearly 18 feet.
In the discus, senior Rachel Picknell placed third (152-1); McShane was seventh (140-8.75) and senior Kayla Fleskes was eighth (137-5.50). McShane and Fleskes posted season PRs.
Earlier Saturday, senior Devin Collins broke the 14-second mark in the 100 hurdles for the first time this season. The school record-holder in the event (13.45), Collins placed sixth in 13.91, her best time this spring by more than .6 seconds.
Vanessa D'Arpino placed fourth in the open 400 (54.95). Kerissa D'Arpino took sixth in the premier 200 (24.06) and eighth in the premier 100 (11.96), running unattached.
The Beavers had four all-time top-10 times or marks on Saturday. They have set two current school records and have posted 26 all-time top-10 times or marks this season.
They return to action next weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific; at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays, and at the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State.
