Women's Rowing Opens Season in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The Oregon State Women's Rowing team opened the season at the inaugural Longhorn Invitational Saturday morning.
The V4+ powered by Lihani du Plessis, Liz Matzdorf, Izzy Holmes and Diana Oppenheimer, and coxed by Cassy Lozano started off the afternoon session in a close race with Oklahoma for first place at the midway point. However, the Beavers were unable to match the Sooners' speed in the second half to earn a second place finish holding off Notre Dame and University of San Diego. The Beavers finished the course in 7-minutes, 25.540-seconds.
Oregon State's Junior Varsity 8 crew battled USD for third place through the entire 2,000-meter course posting a time of 6:37.549 just a half-second behind the Toreros' boat in the afternoon session. The Orange and Black Varsity 8 completed the day's regatta for OSU clocking a time of 6:28.410.
"The team came back for the afternoon session of racing with positive attitudes and a high level of motivation to improve upon the morning race results" said interim head coach Allison Foster. "I was impressed with the team's resilience to return to the course with high spirits and determination despite the disappointing start to the day. We walk away from Texas having learned a lot, and eager to grow throughout our racing season."
During morning racing, each of the Beavers' crews earned spots in the 'B' final. OSU's JV8 trailed Central Florida for third place by nearly six seconds at the halfway mark in its heat race, but rallied over the final 1,000 meters to close the gap to four seconds at the finish line. The V8 produced a time of 6:32.066 while the V4+ time went unrecorded.
Oregon State returns to action, April 1, in Spokane, Wash. to face Gonzaga.
