Oregon State Edged Saturday In Tucson
May 08, 2016 | Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. – The 11th-ranked Oregon State baseball lost in a 4-1 decision to Arizona Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field.
The series finale between the teams is Sunday at 12:05 p.m. PT. It can be seen live on the Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Oregon.
Overall, the Beavers recorded eight hits in the loss. Cadyn Grenier doubled and went 2-for-4 while Christian Donahue pushed his hit streak to five games with a pair of singles.
Nick Madrigal extended his hit streak to 14 games with a first-inning single, tying his season long. A hit in Sunday's finale would give the Beavers two players with 15-game streaks over the last two seasons. Jeff Hendrix accomplished the feat in 2015.
The Beavers (29-14 overall, 10-10 Pac-12 Conference) were handcuffed by Arizona starter JC Cloney, who scattered five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He earned the win to improve to 4-3.
Luke Heimlich started for the Beavers, and worked 6 2/3 innings as well. The lefty allowed four runs – three in the third inning and one in the seventh – and struck out three. He was saddled with the loss to drop to 5-3.
Zach Gibbons tripled home two on a 1-0 pitch in the third inning to put the Wildcats (30-16, 13-10) on the board first. JJ Matijevic drove him in on a double to right center to give Arizona the 3-0 advantage. Heimlich was able to get out of the inning without further damage thanks to a strikeout and groundout.
Heimlich allowed just two runners over the next three innings, but a wild pitch in the seventh netted Arizona its fourth run of the game. Two walks in the inning forced Heimlich from the game with Mitch Hickey relieving the lefty.
The Beavers scored in the ninth when Madrigal reached on a fielder's choice.
