Oregon State Drops Finale In Tucson
May 08, 2016 | Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. – Christian Donahue and KJ Harrison each drove in two and Logan Ice hit his seventh home run of the season but 11th-ranked Oregon State was unable to hold on to a late lead in a 6-5 loss to Arizona Sunday at Hi Corbett Field.
Donahue extended his hit streak to six games with his 56th hit of the season, while Harrison drove in his 38th and 39th runs of the game. Ice's home run, meanwhile, tied for Harrison for the team's lead and was his 38th RBI of the year.
The Beavers (29-15 overall, 10-11 Pac-12 Conference), down 1-0, sent nine to the plate in a four-run third inning. Donahue drove in two to give OSU a 2-1 lead, then watched as Harrison stroked the first pitch he saw into right center for a two-run single.
The Wildcats (31-16, 14-10) added a run in the bottom half of the third to make it a two-run game, but the OSU lead was pushed to three when Ice homered over the left field wall in the sixth.
Arizona pushed four runs across the plate in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. Kyle Lewis drove in the game-winning run with a single up the middle off reliever Max Engelbrekt, who took the loss and dropped to 2-3 on the year.
The win went to Cameron Ming, who improved to 2-1 after allowing one run over six innings.
Neither starter worked long. Jake Thompson opened the game on the hill for the Beavers, and was chased after two innings. He allowed two hits and two runs.
Thompson's counterpart, Michael Flynn, did not allow a hit but did walk a batter. The Beavers scored two of their four runs off him in the third inning.
Oregon State steps out of conference play to take on Portland Tuesday night in Keizer at Volcanoes Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PT. Tickets can be purchased by visiting volcanoestickets.com.
