Beavers Edged In Seesaw Battle
April 16, 2016 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. – KJ Harrison hit his fifth home run of the season but seventh-ranked Oregon State was unable to hold on to a late lead in a 7-5 loss to Washington State Friday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The teams are set for the rubber match Saturday at noon.
Washington State's Mason Cerrillo hit a grand slam in the seventh, a half inning after Harrison put the Beavers up 4-3. Oregon State scored a solo run in the eighth, and pinch hitter Billy King was about 10 feet from a game-tying two-run home run in the ninth. He, however, lined into a double play to second base to end the game.
The Beavers (23-8 overall, 6-5 Pac-12 Conference) were held hitless for the first six innings by Washington State starter Ian Hamilton despite scoring the game's first run in the second.
Down 3-1 entering the seventh, Nick Madrigal broke up the no hitter to open the inning. Two batters later, and with two runners, Harrison hit a laser over the fence in left to put the Beavers up for the second time.
The lead, however, didn't last long. The Cougars' Cerrillo hit a 1-0 pitch from reliever Jordan Britton over the right field fence for the game winner. Britton took the loss to drop to 0-1 on the year.
The win went to Washington State (11-20, 4-10) reliever Ryan Walker. He allowed two hits and a run over three innings to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Jake Thompson posted a quality start in his ninth appearance of the season, holding Washington State to three runs and six hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out seven but did not figure in the decision.
Thompson's counterpart, Hamilton, allowed two hits and four runs in six innings. He struck out four, walked three, and like Thompson, did not figure in the decision.
The teams conclude their three-game series Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT. There will not be a television broadcast for the game, but Washington State will provide a live stream. Find that link by visiting OSUBeavers.com.
