Harrison Homers In Series Finale At Cal
March 26, 2016 | Baseball
BERKELEY, Calif. – KJ Harrison hit his third home run of the season and Luke Heimlich allowed just one run in 4 2/3 innings of relief in No. 3 Oregon State's 5-3 loss to California Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond.
Harrison drilled his second home run of the weekend way over the fence in left to give the Beavers an early 2-0 lead. Both home runs came in the first as he hit a solo shot Thursday night off Cal starter Daulton Jefferies.
Saturday's round-tripper was the 13th of Harrison's career.
For the third time in Pac-12 play, the Beavers chased the opposing starter before the end of the first. On Saturday, that was Jeff Bain, who allowed three runs, including two on Harrison's home run.
The Beavers' (16-5 overall, 3-3 Pac-12 Conference) three-run lead was short lived, however, as the Golden Bears knocked OSU starter Travis Eckert out of the game in the second with a four-run frame.
Heimlich came on in relief of Eckert in the second and proceeded to toss 4 2/3 innings, holding the Golden Bears to one run, two hits and a walk with five strikeouts. The appearance was his ninth of the season, and longest relief outing, surpassing his previous high of three innings during the series versus San Francisco.
Heimlich's lone run allowed came in the seventh when Aaron Knapp tripled off reliever Max Engelbrekt, scoring Devin Pearson. The runner had reached on Heimlich's only walk of afternoon.
Bain did not figure in the decision. The win for Cal (14-6, 4-2) went to reliever Matt Ladrech, who held the Beavers to just one walk in 7 2/3 innings. He walked two and improved to 2-1 on the year.
The loss went to Eckert, who is now 2-2.
The series loss snapped a streak of five straight for the Beavers over the Golden Bears. The last series loss came in 2010, also at Evans Diamond.
