March 29, 2016 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – KJ Harrison went 3-for-4 with a home run and Kyle Nobach hit his second shot of the season but the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to San Diego State Monday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The Aztecs' Alan Trejo hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to snap a 5-5 tie, and it served as the game winner with SDSU's Brian Heldman picking up his second save of the year with a perfect bottom half of the inning.
Harrison singled twice, scored two runs and drove in two. All four of his home runs, which are second on the club to Logan Ice's five, have come over his last eight games.
Andy Atwood also had two hits for the Beavers, who finished with nine on the night.
Nobach got the Beavers (16-6 overall) on the board with a two-run home run in the second, temporarily giving Oregon State a 2-1 lead. The Aztecs then jumped ahead 4-2 thanks to a three-run third.
Harrison stepped to the plate and hit a towering home run to left in the third, putting the teams into a 4-4 tie that lasted until Christian Donahue hit his fourth triple of the game in the seventh, driving in the Beavers' fifth run on the night.
Bryce Fehmel made his second start of the season, and allowed eight hits and four runs over 5 2/3 innings. He did not figure in the decision. Max Engelbrekt took the loss after working 1 1/3 innings. His lone run allowed was Trejo's home run in the ninth. Engelbrekt dropped to 0-1.
Marcus Reyes started for San Diego State (6-16) and allowed six hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Reliever Jacob Erickson picked up the win with one shutout inning. He improved to 2-2.
Oregon State and San Diego State conclude the two-game series Tuesday night at 5:35 p.m. PT. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting BeaverTickets.com. The ticket office at Goss Stadium will open at 3:30 p.m.
