Dax Whitney and Wyatt Queen combined for 11 strikeouts but a pair of groundouts by Cameron Kim were the difference in Oregon State's 2-1 loss to Cal State Fullerton Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Kim grounded out to second in the first and reached on a fielder's choice in the third, barely beating the throw on an attempted double play. That was enough for Fullerton starter Mikiah Negrete, who went the distance, with his lone blemish a fourth-inning sacrifice fly by AJ Singer. Whitney suffered his first loss of the season, dropping to 5-1 after allowing six hits and two runs in seven innings, equaling a career-long outing. He struck out seven to give the right-hander 97 on the season.

Oregon State Notables
• Friday's game marked the shortest of the season, by time, for the Beavers. It went 2:24, seven minutes shorter than a March 6 matchup versus Xavier.
• The Oregon State pitching staff has not issued a walk in four of its last five games. The staff has struck out 44 while issuing just three walks over that five-game stretch.
• The OSU bullpen has issued only five walks in 35 innings in April. The 'pen has struck out 49.
• Ethan Kleinschmit, Saturday's probable starter, has won six consecutive games.
• The lefty held Cal State Fullerton to three runs and five hits in six innings in a win last season.
• The Beavers lost for just the 20th time under Mitch Canham when limiting an opponent to two runs or less. The Beavers are 113-20 when that happens.
• OSU also dropped to 11-46 under Canham when scoring two or less.
• OSU's starters have thrown 71 quality starts under Canham. The Beavers are 56-15 when that happens.
• Adam Haight extended his hit streak to six games with a single in Friday's opener.
