Beavers Beat ASU 12-2, Take Series
March 20, 2016 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Fourth-ranked Oregon State sent 10 to the plate in a six-run first inning en route to a 12-2 series-clinching victory over Arizona State in front of a near capacity crowd of 3,114 Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Jake Thompson went seven, scattering five hits with six strikeouts, and the Beavers moved to 2-0 in Pac-12 Conference play with the convincing victory. OSU improved to 14-2 on the year while ASU dropped to 13-5.
Oregon State did not allow Sun Devil starter Eli Lingos to record an out, driving the lefty from the game after he allowed three hits and six runs – two earned – with two walks. He took the loss, dropping to 2-2 on the year.
KJ Harrison, Jack Anderson, Trever Morrison and Caleb Hamilton all drove home runs in the six-run first. The 10 sent to the plate in the first marked the fifth time the Beavers have batted around in an inning this season.
Anderson and Morrison each finished the game two runs batted in, while Nick Madrigal went 3-for-5 with a triple to pace the Oregon State offense, which finished the day with 11 hits. Hamilton and Christian Donahue also had two hits for the Beavers, who hit the double-digit plateau on the scoreboard for the fifth time this season.
Thompson rolled behind the first-inning outburst. Making his fifth start of the season, Thompson, a junior, worked a season-long seven innings. He walked two and lowered his earned run average to 2.49. He improved to 2-1 on the year.
Up 7-0 after two, the Beavers added solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings. OSU scored another in the seventh then went up 12-0 with a two-run eighth.
The 12 runs scored by the Beavers is one shy of tying the program's record for the most in a single game against ASU, last done in 1985.
Oregon State and Arizona State conclude the three-game series Sunday with a 12:35 p.m. PT first pitch at Goss Stadium. Please note the start is 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled due to Arizona State's travel schedule.
The ticket office at Goss Stadium will open two hours prior to first pitch. Student tickets will also be distributed at Gate 6 starting two hours before first pitch.
