Oregon State Sweeps Arizona State
March 20, 2016 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Travis Eckert scattered two hits and a run in eight innings and Christian Donahue went 3-for-5 as fourth-ranked Oregon State swept visiting Arizona State with a 7-3 win Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Eckert was dominant, striking out six in his fifth start of the season, to pick up the win, improving his record to 2-1 on the year. The senior's lone two hits came back-to-back in the fourth when Arizona State was able to scratch across a run, putting OSU's lead at 2-1.
Eckert has allowed just eight hits and five runs over his last 22 1/3 innings. He has struck out 17 over that stretch.
Donahue was a home run short of the cycle in a 3-for-5 effort to pace the OSU offense, which recorded nine hits on the day. KJ Harrison and Jack Anderson also had two hits for the Beavers, whose sweep of Arizona State was the team's first since 2011.
The Beavers (15-2 overall, 3-0 Pac-12 Conference) jumped ahead 2-0 in the first thanks to back-to-back RBI from Harrison and Logan Ice.
OSU extended its lead to 5-1 in the fifth. Donahue drove in the first run of the inning with a triple, then scored when Nick Madrigal extended his hit streak to 11 games with a single to center. Ice then drove in his second run of the day with a sac fly to center.
The Beavers went up 7-1 with a two-run eighth before the Sun Devils (13-6, 0-3) added two in the ninth for the 7-3 final.
Max Engelbrekt picked up his eighth save of the season after getting the game's final two outs.
The Beavers chased Arizona State's starter before one full inning for the second consecutive game. Reagan Todd managed to get two outs in the first, but was tagged for three hits and two runs before giving way to reliever Eder Erives. Todd took the loss, dropping to 1-2 on the year.
