March 13, 2016 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Nick Madrigal and KJ Harrison each tallied two hits and Jake Thompson, Luke Heimlich and Mitch Hickey combined for a five-hit shutout as fourth-ranked Oregon State defeated San Francisco, 4-0, on Saturday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The victory gives the Beavers the series, and Oregon State will go for the sweep in a 1 p.m. PT start on Sunday.
Saturday's victory extends Oregon State's win streak to 11 games, which is tied with North Carolina for the longest active streak in the nation. It also improves OSU's record to 12-1 this season, while San Francisco drops to 2-14.
Cadyn Grenier opened the game's scoring with an RBI on a fielder's choice in the third, then watched as Caleb Hamilton drove in the game's second run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Harrison doubled home a run and Logan Ice hit the Beavers' second sac fly of the day in the seventh to give the Beavers the four-run lead.
Heimlich came on in relief of Thompson in the fifth and shut down the USF bats, limiting the Dons to two hits and a walk in three innings. He struck out three and improved to 3-0 on the year.
Thompson started for the Beavers, and threw 60 pitches over 4 2/3 innings. He allowed three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. The righty left with a 2-0 lead but did not go the requisite five innings for the win.
Hickey finished the shutout, appearing for the first time this season. The sophomore faced four batters over 1 1/3 innings, striking out two.
The Beavers chased San Francisco starter Chase Gardner after 4 1/3 innings. The lefty allowed six hits and two runs with a strikeout and two walks. He took the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the season.
