Heimlich's Sharp As Beavers End Trip With Win
February 28, 2016 | Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Luke Heimlich tossed seven scoreless innings and the fifth-ranked Oregon State baseball team concluded its eight-game to Arizona with a 3-1 win over Kansas Sunday at Surprise Stadium.
Heimlich, making his second start of the season and fourth of his career, held the Jayhawks to four hits and a walk. The lefty struck out three, threw 102 pitches and earned the victory to improve to 2-0 this season.
Max Engelbrekt, who earned his fourth save of the season, got the Beavers out of a jam in the eighth. The lefty came in with runners on the corners and one down, the Beavers holding the two-run lead. He hit the first batter he faced, but then proceeded to get a flyout to right and a strikeout to end the Kansas rally.
The win ended the Beavers' 10-day trip to Arizona. Oregon State finished with a 7-1 record, and is on a six-game win streak, having defeated Minnesota, Utah, Kansas State twice and Kansas twice over that stretch.
The Oregon State offense managed just four hits off Kansas' (2-4) starter Jackson Goddard and reliever Zack Leban, but made them count.
Up 1-0 in the bottom half of the sixth, the Beavers were looking for some much needed breathing room and got it from Kyle Nobach. Both KJ Harrison and Cadyn Grenier were hit by pitches, and scored when Nobach laced a two-out single to right field.
Nick Madrigal opened the game's scoring with an RBI single in the third. He drove in Christian Donahue, who had reached on an error, then moved to second when Trever Morrison grounded out to short.
The Beavers chased Goddard after 5 1/3 innings. He allowed three hits and three runs while striking out three but took the loss to drop to 0-1 on the year.
Oregon State is back in action Friday when visiting the University of San Diego. First pitch from Fowler Park is slated for 6 p.m. PT.
