Beavers Turn in Strong Performance in Portland
October 30, 2016 | Men's Rowing
PORTLAND, Ore. – Four Oregon State men's crews battled it out against each other at the Portland Fall Classic Sunday morning. It was the first OSU has raced four 8's in the Fall Classic.
The Beavers raced two Varsity 8's in the Men's Collegiate Division 1 Varsity 8+ category. Oregon State crew in the "Joey Hansen," coxswained by Heather Thompson, and powered by Spencer Smith, Nathan Smith, Baxter Call, Frank Horpel, Torin Kingshill, Dmitri Shockey, Camron Gharib, and Miles Moran, took first with a time of 15-minutes, 52.819-seconds. Following closely behind was the "George Dirth," with a time of 15:58.401.
"The perfect fall racing conditions made it easy for all four boats to have strong pieces," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "Our top guys showed depth by being separated by only 5.5 seconds."
OSU also entered two boats in the Men's Collegiate Division 1 JV 8+ race, with "Sam G" coming in first with a time of 16:21.510 and the "Keen" registering a time of 16:28.198.
"Watch out for these freshman, they could steal some seats in the varsity boat come spring," Winkler said.
The Beavers' alumni boat took the water this weekend in the Men's Masters 8+, taking second by just 0.2 seconds, posting a time of 17:15.842.
