Beaver Men’s Rowing Places Third at MPSF Championship
May 18, 2025 | Men's Rowing
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Oregon State men's rowing finished in third place at the inaugural Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Rowing Championship on Sunday, with a fourth place finish by the varsity eight earning its place in the 2025 IRA National Championship.
"The first year of the MPSF was a resounding success - the racing was great top to bottom, and I think there's even room to grow this event," Head Coach Gabe Winkler said. "The varsity put together their best piece of the season yesterday in the heats to qualify for the A final, and being on the shores to watch the women sweep the WCC Championship yesterday was really special.
"I think we fed off of that energy into our races," Winkler added. "In the same way, we punched our ticket to the IRA. That is huge racing in two weeks."
Racing began on Saturday with two heats of the first and second eight, with OSU placing second in both heats. Led off by the varsity eight, the Beavs beat out Gonzaga and San Diego while finishing behind Washington, while the second eight once again came in behind Washington but ahead of UC San Diego and San Diego in its four-team heat, earning a spot in the Grand Finals on Sunday.
The second day of racing got underway with a 1V4 Grand Final that saw the Beavs finish in fourth place. Up next, in the Third Varsity Eight Grand Final, OSU's 3V8 finished in third place out of six total teams, completing the course in 6:15.603 ahead of Gonzaga (6:20.321), Santa Clara (6:22.244) and UC San Diego (6:35.902).
Both the second and first eight also placed fourth in their grand finals.
When the final points were tallied, OSU totaled 47 points, good for third place behind Washington (68) and California (69) but ahead of Stanford (42), UC San Diego (33), Gonzaga (28), Santa Clara (26) and San Diego (seven).
Sunday's fourth place finish by the 1V8+ earned Oregon State a spot in the IRA National Championship Regatta, which will take place May 30 – June 1 on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
