The 2021-22 season will be the seventh with Gabe Winkler in charge of the Oregon State men’s rowing program. Winkler was formally hired as the Oregon State head men’s rowing coach August 21, 2015 following the 2014-15 season, in which he filled the position on an interim basis.
In his first season in charge along the banks of the Willamette River, Winkler directed his crews to a third place team finish at Pac-12 Championships and a return to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships. Three out of four crews – Second Varsity 8, Third Varsity 8 and Novice 8 – raced to bronze medals at the conference regatta.
Winkler’s 2015-16 charges once again turned in a strong performance at Pac-12 Championships with the 3V8 and N8 securing bronze medals. Three crews qualified to IRA Championships with the 3V8 taking first in the Third Final to finish 13th overall. A strong group of newcomers joined the program making a strong impression and are expected to be good building blocks for the future.
In 2016-17, the Beavers earned a third-place team finish at Pac-12 Championships. OSU’s Varsity 8 concluded the season with a 20th place finish at IRAs. In the fall, the Varsity 4+ turned in a sixth-place finish at the Head of the Charles, second among collegiate crews. Winkler’s rowers also set a school-record placing 16 student-athletes on the Pac-12 All-Academic team.
The 2017-18 campaign included several impressive performances for the Beavers including a fourth-place finish in the V4+ at the Head of the Charles and a dual sweep of Georgetown at the Stanford Invitational. The Beavers finished the season ranked at No. 19 in the nation and a dozen OSU rowers received Pac-12 All-Academic recognition.
In 2018-19, the Beavers recorded sweeps over Marist, Gonzaga, UCLA, Santa Clara and Hobart. OSU went on to finish fourth at Pac-12 Championships earned a berth at IRA National Championships. The Varsity 8 finished 20th overall at IRAs with 15th and 14th-place finishes respectively by the Second Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8. In addition, 10 student-athletes picked up Pac-12 All-Academic honors and Hunter Smith received Pac-12 All-Conference recognition.
His sixth year at the helm was expected to bring another program to another level, but the season was canceled in mid-March after a single spring race due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to being elevated to interim head coach, Winkler was charged with building the novice program from 2008-14. His work paid dividends beginning in his first season, and his crews earned medals in the freshman 8+ for four consecutive years at the Pac-12 Rowing Championships.
In 2013, Winkler helped to direct the Beavers back to the IRA Championships where several of his young rowers manned the Open 4+ racing to a sixth place finish in the Grand Final.
Winkler’s novices again impacted the squad in 2014 rowing to a bronze medal finish at Pac-12 Championships and several moved up to the junior varsity crew at IRA Championships where they helped the JV to a 12th-place finish overall.
Prior to his arrival at OSU, Winkler, a seven-time U.S. national team member, worked two seasons as the men's lightweight coach at Rutgers University. While at Rutgers, Winkler controlled all aspects of the novice lightweight crew including the technique, training and recruiting.
Winkler's impressive rowing résumé includes international success in both sweep and sculling events; in both lightweight and heavyweight divisions. In 2007, Winkler won a gold, in the heavyweight 8+, and silver, in the heavyweight 4-, at the Pan-American Games. He was also part of a gold medal crew at the 2000 World Championships in the lightweight 8+.
While with the U.S. National Team, Winkler rowed at the 1998 Nation's Cup in the Under-23 lightweight 4; the 2000 FISA World Championships in the lightweight 8; the 2001 and 2002 FISA World Championships in the lightweight 4; 2004 FISA World Championships in the lightweight 8; the 2006 sculling spare; and the 2007 Pan-American Championships in the heavyweight 8 and heavyweight 4. Gabe has also captured numerous National Championships in lightweight events and a Head of the Charles Championship in the Lightweight 4+.
A 1999 graduate of Cornell University, Winkler has a degree in plant science. He and his wife, Rachel, have a son, Levi.
