Moore, No. 22 Beavers Shut Out Utah

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Andrew Moore tossed a six-hit shutout Friday night as the 22nd-ranked Oregon State baseball team defeated Utah, 3-0, to open a three-game series at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Moore needed just 99 pitches – 76 of which went for strikes – for his fourth career shutout and first since the 2013 season. He allowed three of the six hits in the fifth – all coming consecutively – as the Utes loaded the bases with one down.
Moore then spun a double play ball to Michael Gretler at third base to end in the inning.
The junior earned the win, his fifth of the year and 25th of his career, placing him into a three-way tie for ninth all-time. Moore struck out four and lowered his earned run average to 1.80 on the year. Opponents are batting just .191 against him this season, including a .186 in Pac-12 Conference action.
The Beavers managed just six hits of their own against three Utes' pitchers – record five off starter Bret Helton – but made them count. Billy King gave the Beavers the lead for good with a two-run double in the fourth that extended his hit streak to three games. King has three doubles and five runs batted in over his last two games after posting two doubles and three RBI Tuesday against Oregon.
Elliott Cary stretched the Beavers' lead to 3-0 when he singled up the middle in the fifth off Helton. The run was the lone earned run of the night as the two runs in the fourth came in large part to a Utah error.
Cary had two hits to pace the Beavers, who won their third consecutive game and improved to 31-14 on the year. OSU is now 13-9 against conference foes.
Cary and Christian Donahue each extended their respective hit streaks to six games. Jeff Hendrix doubled in four at bats to push his to 12 games, which ties a season-long for the junior.
Helton took the loss for Utah (16-28, 7-15), dropping his record to 2-7 on the year. He walked two and struck out two in six innings.
Oregon State and Utah continue the series Saturday with a 1:35 p.m. PT first pitch at Goss Stadium. The gates and ticket office at the stadium are scheduled to open at 11:30 a.m.
