Beavers Beat Stanford To Open Series
May 16, 2015 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – KJ Harrison homered and Michael Gretler drove in two during a three-run OSU fifth inning to send the 19th-ranked Beavers to a 5-2 win over Stanford Friday night at Sunken Diamond.
Harrison also singled home a run in the first to help guide the Beavers to their ninth straight victory over the Cardinal. OSU is 8-1-1 in its last 10 games and is undefeated in its last seven, going 6-0-1 over that stretch.
Harrison opened the game's scoring with the aforementioned single, then watched as Caleb Hamilton drove in a run on a single in the second.
OSU (34-14-1 overall, 15-9-1 Pac-12 Conference) saw that lead expand to five with three runs in the fifth. Harrison hit the first pitch of the inning over the fence in left center; it was his 10th home run of the year and third in his last two games.
Gretler made it 5-0, when, with the bases loaded, he scorched a single to left, enabling two runs to score.
The Cardinal put two on the board in the bottom half of the fifth to pull to within three but was unable to capitalize the rest of the game.
Andrew Moore started for the Beavers and worked 5 2/3 innings, scattering eight hits and two runs before giving way to Scotland Church in the sixth. Moore issued an uncharacteristic four walks but also struck out five to get the win and improve to 6-2 on the year.
Brett Hanewich started for the Cardinal (22-29, 7-18) and lasted just 4 1/3 innings before giving way to reliever Tyler Thorne with the bases loaded in the fifth. Thorne's first batter, Gretler, singled to left, which closed the book on Hanewich, who allowed six hits and five runs. He walked seven and took the loss to drop to 3-6 on the year.
Scotland Church and Luke Heimlich combined for 3 1/3 innings of relief; Heimlich picked up his fourth save of the season.
Harrison and Christian Donahue's two hits apiece paced the Beavers.
Oregon State and Stanford combined for 16 walks and 25 batters left on base.
The teams continue the series Saturday night in a 7:05 p.m. PT first pitch from Sunken Diamond.
The game will be live on the Pac-12 Networks. It will also be carried over the airwaves on the Beaver Sports Radio Network and the TuneIn application.
