Beavers Take Opener In Extras
May 01, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Elliott Cary's two-run single in the 10th inning proved to be the game winner as the Oregon State baseball team defeated Washington, 4-2, Thursday afternoon at Husky Ballpark
Cary singled on a 1-0 pitch up the middle off reliever Troy Rallings. The single scored Logan Ice from third and Jeff Hendrix from second, and sent the Beavers to a three-game win streak.
Ice opened the inning with a single, and moved to third when Jeff Hendrix's sacrifice bunt was thrown into right field. The second of third baseman Alex Schmidt's errors on the day proved costly as KJ Harrison was walked to load the bases. Two batters later, and Cary gave the Beavers a lead they would not relinquish.
Schmidt's first error of the day also played a key role in the Beavers' first two runs of the game. Hendrix nubbed a grounder to third, and reached on an errant throw. It enabled two Beavers to score.
That lead, however, did not last as Austin Rei provided the Huskies with their lone offensive output in the bottom half of the seventh. His two-run home run off OSU starter Andrew Moore marked the junior's first earned runs of the season on the road.
Moore was stellar otherwise, scattering two hits and two runs over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out six.
OSU sent three freshmen to the hill to relieve Moore – Luke Heimlich, Sam Tweedt and Mitch Hickey – where they combined for two hits allowed, no runs and four strikeouts. Tweedt, who picked up the last out of the ninth, earned the win to improve to a team-best 6-0 this year. Hickey, meanwhile, earned his seventh save with a scoreless 10th.
Rallings took the loss for Washington, dropping to 3-4.
Harrison, Christian Donahue and Kyle Nobach all had two hits to pace the Beavers, who finished with 10 off four Washington pitchers.
The win assured the Beavers of their 15th consecutive winning month in the regular season as OSU finished April with a 7-6 record. Overall, OSU is 28-13 on the year with an 11-8 Pac-12 Conference mark.
The Huskies, meanwhile, dropped to 23-20 overall and 8-14 in league action.
The teams continue the series Friday with a 7:05 p.m. PT first pitch from Husky Ballpark. The game can be seen live on the Pac-12 Networks with audio via the Beaver Sports Radio Network and TuneIn.
The game is a part of the Northwest Rivalry Series, presented by Alaska.
