Cary Homers, But Beavers Unable To Hold On
April 05, 2015 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Elliott Cary homered and Oregon State held an early lead but was unable to hold on in a 10-5 loss to UCLA Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Down 2-0, the Beavers took a 5-2 lead in the fourth. Cary punctuated the inning with a two-run home run, the first of his career, and Kyle Nobach gave OSU (22-9 overall, 5-4 Pac-12 Conference) its first lead with a two-run single. Billy King had driven in the team's first run on a bases-loaded groundout to first.
The lead, however, did not last as the Bruins (23-6, 10-2) scored solo runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at five.
Then, in the eighth, with one down and the bases loaded, Trent Chatterton singled through the right side of the infield to give the Bruins a one-run lead. Two batters later, Brett Stephens hit a fly to left that should have ended the inning but Nobach lost the ball in the lights and UCLA scored three to add insurance runs.
Both starters were chased early. OSU's Travis Eckert worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. His counterpart, Griffin Canning, was relieved after 3 1/3 innings, where he allowed five hits and five runs – four earned.
Neither figured in the decision.
The loss went to reliever Luke Heimlich, who was charged with the game-winning run in the eighth. He worked 1 1/3 innings and dropped to 1-3 on the year.
David Berg finished the win for UCLA with two relief innings to pick up the win. He improved to 3-0 on the year.
Oregon State remains on the road next weekend when visiting Oregon at PK Park. The Civil War presented by PacificSource Health Plans, The Oregon 529 College Savings Network, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores, will open Friday night at 7:30 p.m. PT in a game televised on ESPNU.
