Beavers Sweep Doubleheader Saturday
March 08, 2015 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Fresno State Saturday, defeating the Bulldogs, 5-2, in game one, and 12-2 in game two at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The wins give the Beavers a series victory and OSU goes for the sweep Sunday in a 1:05 p.m. PT first pitch.
The Beavers, who have now won eight straight, won game one on the strength of a two-run home run by Gabe Clark in the third inning that pushed OSU (12-3 overall) to a 4-1 lead. The Beavers had scored in the first when Fresno State committed an error and Kyle Nobach hit a sacrifice fly.
After Fresno State pulled to within two, the Beavers stretched the lead for good in the eighth when Joey Jansen scored on a throwing error by pitcher Rickey Ramirez.
The win went to Drew Rasmussen, who started and worked 7 1/3 innings. The freshman, making his second career start, improved to 2-0 after allowing eight hits and two runs with five strikeouts.
Fresno State's (7-8) Dylan Lee took the loss to fall to 1-2. He scattered four hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings.
Mitch Hickey earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
It was all OSU's offense in the second game. Jeff Hendrix led Oregon State with four runs batted in while KJ Harrison homered and doubled. Gabe Clark recorded four hits to pace the Beavers, who tallied 16 off four Fresno State pitchers.
Already up 3-0 after two innings, the Beavers sent 12 batters to the plate in an eight-run third inning for the big advantage.
Harrison hit his sixth home run of the season in the first. It was Oregon State's 20th of the season – pushing the Beavers one shy of the team mark from last year – and Harrison's round-tripper was the club's first in the first inning this season.
Clark, Hendrix, Trever Morrison and Christian Donahue also had doubles in the win.
Travis Eckert started for the Beavers and went 8 2/3 innings for his second victory of the 2015 season. The right-hander scattered four hits and two runs while striking out five.
Dominic Topoozian took the loss to drop to 0-2 this season. He allowed four hits and three runs in two innings.
On the day, the OSU staff combined for 18 innings of work, allowing 13 hits and four runs with 11 strikeouts. Five pitchers – Rasmussen, Eckert, Hickey, Luke Heimlich and Zack Reser – combined to walk just one batter.
OSU and Fresno State conclude their four-game series Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. PT first pitch at Goss Stadium. A limited number of tickets remains for the finale which can be purchased by visiting BeaverTickets.com or at the stadium ticket office, which will open at 11 a.m.
