Beavers Win 22nd Straight Over Pilots
March 05, 2015 | Baseball
PORTLAND, Ore. – Kyle Nobach tallied four hits and Jeff Hendrix, Gabe Clark and Joe Gillette all hit home runs to send the Oregon State baseball team to a 14-2 win over Portland Wednesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.
The win marked Oregon State's 22nd straight over the Pilots, setting a new school record for the most consecutive victories over one opponent. The previous record was 21 straight over the Pilots from 1959-69.
On Wednesday, it was Nobach who led the Beavers en route to the team's 18 overall hits. Seven of the team's 18 went for extra bases, including the aforementioned home runs by Hendrix, Clark and Gillette, two doubles by KJ Harrison and one apiece by Hendrix and Nobach.
For Nobach, it marked his first career four-hit day and it was his third multi-hit game of the season. Hendrix recorded three hits for his fifth multi-hit effort, while Dane Lund's three hits gives him two multi-hit days on the year.
Nobach extended his hit streak to four games; he is 8-for-11 with three doubles and eight RBI during it.
Harrison and Caleb Hamilton also had two hits apiece; Harrison led the Beavers with four RBI after his double in the ninth cleared the bases.
OSU scored once in the first and blew the game open with a five-run second inning that was punctuated by Hendrix and a three-run home run. The Beavers sent nine to the plate and took a 6-0 lead after two innings.
Gillette followed that up with a two-run home run in the third, and Clark hit a solo shot – his fourth round-tripper of the season – in the sixth inning.
Sam Tweedt made his first career start and retired the first 11 batters he faced before allowing a two-out home run to Kevin Wade in the fourth. Tweedt was relieved by Luke Heimlich with a runner on second and no outs in the seventh after allowing four hits and a run.
He struck out six and did not issue a walk to improve to 2-0 this season.
OSU now returns home for a four-game series against Fresno State that begins at 5:35 p.m. PT at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. For tickets, visit BeaverTickets.com or call 800-GOBEAVS between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
