Beavers Take Series Finale Over Mustangs
March 29, 2015 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Michael Gretler's run-scoring single in the fifth inning proved to be the game winner as the 24th-ranked Oregon State baseball team defeated Cal Poly, 4-2, Sunday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field in the series finale.
Gretler lofted a pitch from reliever Michael Gomez into the gap in right center, driving in Kyle Nobach for a 3-2 lead. A batter earlier, Logan Ice had driven in the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly to left.
OSU added an insurance run in the ninth when Trever Morrison, batting in the fifth spot of the lineup for the first time this season, walked with the bases loaded.
The runs supported Oregon State starter Travis Eckert, who scattered six hits and two runs over six innings to earn the win and improve to 3-0 on the year. The right-hander struck out three and walked three.
OSU (21-7 overall) managed just five hits off five Cal Poly (9-15) pitchers, but made them count. KJ Harrison drove in the game's first run on a single in the fourth.
The Mustangs, however, answered back with a pair of run-scoring single in the fifth. Peter Van Gansen tied the game, and was followed by an RBI off the bat of Brian Mundell.
Cal Poly had just six hits, all off Eckert. Luke Heimlich, John Pomeroy, Mak Fox and Mitch Hickey limited the Mustangs to just two walks in the final three innings. Hickey worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Oregon State jumps back into Pac-12 Conference play this weekend when visiting UCLA for a three-game series that begins Thursday night. First pitch Thursday is 7 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. start Friday and a 4 p.m. game Saturday. All three games of the series are slated to air on the Pac-12 Networks.
