Short-handed Beavers Fall to Huskies
January 16, 2015 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE, Wash. – Junior forward Jarmal Reid led Oregon State with 10 points and eight rebounds on Thursday night but the Beavers fell 56-43 to Washington in a Pacific-12 Conference game at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Washington used an 8-0 run to erase a 29-28 deficit with 13:11 to play to break open a close game and take the lead for good. OSU (11-5, 2-2 Pac-12) never got closer than three points thereafter and saw its two-game overall and Pac-12 winning streak come to an end.
The Huskies (12-4, 1-3 Pac-12) eventually led by as many as 14 points in snapping a four-game losing streak and holding the Beavers to their lowest point total of the season. OSU's previous low was 52 points, in a Dec. 21 loss at Quinnipiac.
“Our guys gave a great effort,” coach Wayne Tinkle said. “In the second half we didn't defend,” in part attributable to frustration and fatigue. “We had too many turnovers, and with what we are dealing with we can't have that.
“We had too many turnovers (15) and we missed too many shots, but sometimes you just miss shots. Barring the turnovers and a few possessions where we stood, we did what we needed to do.
“A few turnover and missed shots led to a drop of focus, and they made some plays.”
OSU was within 46-41 with 3:11 to play, but did not score another basket and was outscored 10-2 the rest of the way. The Beavers shot just 32 percent (15-47) from the field, had15 turnovers and were outrebounded 31-30.
“We gave up a couple of [3-point baskets] late that were huge for them,” Tinkle added. “We didn't recognize who was in the area,” and Washington's top shooters made the Beavers pay.
“We have to do a better job of defending. Fatigue set in and that was the reason for that.”
The Beavers have only eight scholarship players at full strength, and on Thursday they were missing junior guard Victor Robbins, their third-leading scorer (10.3 ppg). He has been suspended 10 games for a violation of an athletic department policy.
Sophomore guard Malcolm Duvivier added 10 points, junior guard Gary Payton II had eight rebounds and three assists and junior center Daniel Gomis added nine points and four rebounds for the Beavers.
OSU started quickly and led 10-4 with 16:11left in the first half after a basket by Daniel Gomis. However, the Huskies went on an 11-0 run over the next six minutes to take their largest lead of the half at 15-10.
The Beavers replied with five straight for a 15-15 tie, then went cold. Neither team scored for the next six minutes before the Huskies tallied four points in the final 1:12 to take a 19-15 halftime lead.
The Beavers conclude their first Pac-12 road trip at 6 p.m. Saturday against Washington State in Pullman. The game will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
Their next home game is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 22 against UCLA. It will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
