PULLMAN, Wash. – Langston Morris-Walker recorded a double-double with career-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds and Gary Payton II registered his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds as Oregon State marched to a 62-47 victory over Washington State on Saturday night at Beasley Coliseum.
Oregon State (12-5, 3-2 Pac-12), came out and set the tempo early, not allowing the Cougars to get comfortable on either end, holding Washington State (9-8, 3-2) to 29.2 percent from the field by playing suffocating defense.
“I'm super proud of our guys," Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle said. "The second game on this two-game road trip and they really came together, they bought into the plan and they fought and clawed defensively and on the glass.
"We had moments again offensively where we got a little goofy, but we played through it this time and stayed together.
"I'm super, super proud of their focus. When you look at those defensive numbers and those numbers on the boards, that's pretty good stuff.”
Morris-Walker set the tone for Oregon State, going 5-for-7 from the field, 3-of-4 from downtown and hitting 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Payton II lived up to his balanced reputation, making 5-of-11 field goals attempts, nabbing five steals and dishing out two assists on the night.
Olaf Schaftenaar was also key for the Beavers, adding eight points after a 3-for-5 shooting performance.
The Beavers also showed their power inside, outrebounding Washington State 37-22 and outscoring the Cougars 24-12 in the paint.
DaVonte Lacy led Washington State with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Josh Hawkinson also played well, adding 11 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars.
The Beavers marched out to an early 17-7 lead after Payton II got a layup to fall with 10:55 on the clock in the first frame.
Oregon State would stay hot, limiting the Cougars' looks and extending the lead to 21-12 at the 6:38 mark.
Going into the locker room, the Beavers maintained a 25-16 lead after holding Washington State to a 24 percent clip from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play.
Oregon State put on a clinic at the beginning of the closing half, propping out to a 33-16 lead after a dominant 8-0 run.
With 3:30 remaining, Washington State narrowed the gap to eight, 49-41, but could not overcome OSU's intensity on both ends of the court for the remainder of the contest.
Coming up, the Beavers look to remain perfect at Gill Coliseum, facing off with UCLA on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a game televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
