Beavers Fall to No. 6 Bruins

LOS ANGELES – The No. 14 Oregon State gymnastics team scored 195.625 in a loss at No. 6 UCLA in its Pac-12 opener Sunday evening. The Beavers (2-1) outscored the Bruins (1-1) by nearly a full point on the balance beam but it wasn't enough as UCLA cracked the 49-point mark on the other three events to come out on top with a score of 196.425.
“We had some really good individual performances but as a team I'm disappointed,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “There was improvement in some areas from last week but this team needs to find its identity. There is a lot of work to do to get ready for next week and we have a lot of work to do to be the kind of team we want to be.”
The Beavers got off to a slow start opening the meet on the uneven bars for the second week in a row. Taylor Keeker (9.75), Chelsea Tang (9.80) and Brittany Harris (9.85) posted solid routines but were interspersed with mistakes from the other three routines.
Trailing by nearly a full point at the midway point, Oregon State made up ground in the third rotation when UCLA was forced to count a fall. Nicole Turner and Kaytianna McMillan led the Beavers on the floor exercise in the rotation to score a 48.775.
It was a strong finish in the final rotation when the Beavers broke the 49-point mark for the first time in the meet scoring 49.175 on the balance beam. Tang scored 9.875 and Madeline Gardiner added a career-best 9.85. Harris and McMillan posted scores of 9.825 and Katelyn Ohlrich added a 9.80.
Keeker posted a career-high 9.90 on the vault while Tang and Kelsi Blalock each tallied scores of 9.80.
Oregon State returns to Corvallis for the first of four straight home meets beginning with Iowa State Sat., Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. in Gill Coliseum.
