CORVALLIS, Ore. - Five Oregon State players scored in double figures, led by Devon Collier's 16 points and another double-double by Eric Moreland, as the Beavers picked up their first Pac-12 win of the season, 74-66, over the Washington Huskies Wednesday night at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers (11-8, 1-5 Pac-12) broke into the win column in a big way as they played with a lot of energy on defense and spread the ball around offensively with 18 assists on their 25 field goals.
"We needed that win obviously and it feels good," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "The best part about this is it was a complete team effort. You look at the stat sheet and see five guys in double figures, that's one thing but what you don't see on the stat sheet is the guys who didn't play but were playing the University of Washington's offense for us all week long.
"These guys have won games before and they know we have a lot of work to do. I would say there was probably a little relief there and there was legitimate happiness about winning but there wasn't a slapping around, high fives. We have a lot of work to do and we have a lot of basketball to play. What you saw was what we are capable of doing but have even still more that we can accomplish."
Collier's 16 points came on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and 8-of-11 from the line, while Moreland had his 11th career double-double and Pac-12-best eighth this season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Moreland also blocked four shots to move into a tie for second all-time at Oregon State with Steve Johnson for rejections with 114.
The other Beavers in double figures included Roberto Nelson with 15, Joe Burton with 13 and Ahmad Starks with 10.
The Beavers came out of the gate aggressive building a 20-point lead at 34-14 on breakaway dunk by Moreland. OSU led wire-to-wire and in the first half also had leads of 11-1 and 20-10 before going on a 14-4 run. The Huskies clawed back to within 10 at halftime thanks to some key late baskets, including an Abdul Gaddy three-pointer at the buzzer.
Washington was the more aggressive team early in the second half and cut the lead 53-52 on a C.J. Wilcox three with 12:17 left. The Huskies had three chances to take the lead, twice when the score was 53-52 and shortly thereafter when the score was 55-54. The Beavers, however, tightened up their defense, corralled some loose balls and hit 11-of-15 free throw attempts in the final minutes to hold the lead and pick up their first league victory.
"Desperate times call for desperate measures," Robinson said. "I think that's what they were feeling. I mean they came ready to play and we talk about all the time how we all try and get ourselves prepared but once you roll the ball out there or throw the ball up, it's up to those guys from an effort standpoint and I though they just answered the bell."
All five Oregon State players who scored in double figures - Collier, Nelson, Burton, Moreland and Starks - went to the post-game press conference.
Burton said it best when the question began from the media: "There should be 15 of us up here. We are a team. We practice as a team and win as a team."
Wilcox led the Huskies with 23 points as Washington (12-7, 4-2) lost its second straight game.
The Beavers will host Washington State (10-9, 1-5 Pac-12) at Gill Coliseum on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a game televised nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.
