CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ahmad Starks scored 17 points and tied his career high with eight assists, but Oregon State couldn't catch a break down the stretch and Washington State took advantage to win 71-68 Saturday afternoon in front of 6,592 fans at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers (11-9, 1-6 Pac-12) got 14 points apiece from Roberto Nelson and Langston Morris-Walker had his best game at Oregon State with nine points on three from long distance. But Mike Ladd and Brock Motum scored 23 and 20, respectively, to lead the Cougars to the hard-fought win.
"I feel for the guys in the locker room," Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. "We almost followed our game plan; I will put it that way. But, we just have to move on. I thought there were some very key situations where we had to convert and make something happen, but for whatever reason it just didn't go our way.
"I like the way we played, but what did stand out to me were the offensive rebounds. Those second chance points also killed us today."
Oregon State had a season-low 27 rebounds, while the Cougars had 39 boards, including 11 on the offensive end, to outscore the Beavers 14-6 on second chance points.
Starks was wide of the basket on a potential game-tying three-pointer from the top of the arc in the closing seconds. That followed Washington State's DaVonte Lacy's two missed free throws and Starks' layup with 7.9 seconds left to cut the Cougars' advantage to one.
Royce Woolridge of Washington State then made two foul shots, setting up Starks' final attempt.
Ladd's layup gave Washington State its first lead of the second half at 37-36 after the Cougars trailed at halftime, 33-29, when Nelson made a long three-pointer at the buzzer.
Eric Moreland had seven points, seven rebounds and a career-high four assists, and moved into second all-time at Oregon State with 115 blocked shots to pass Steve Johnson. The school's career leader is Scott Haskin with 172.
The Beavers will head to the Bay Area to play California at 7 p.m. on Thursday in a game televised nationally on ESPNU and Stanford at noon on Sunday on the Pac-12 Networks.
