CORVALLIS, Ore.. - Jarmal Reid had his best game at Oregon State with six points, 11 rebounds and five assists, but it wasn't enough as the Beavers fell to Arizona State, 72-62, Thursday night at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers (10-5, 0-2 Pac-12) battled throughout but were short-handed against a red-hot Sun Devils' team that has won six straight games to improve to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in Pac-12 play.
Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson announced after the game that Victor Robbins have been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.
With Moreland unavailable, the Beavers had to rely on others to replace his 10.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Collier, who has been the primary sixth man all season, got the start and had a solid all-around game, as did Reid, who finished with a career-high 11 boards and tied his career best with five assists.
Freshman Olaf Schaftenaar played 16 minutes and scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds as he fought hard under the basket to contain Arizona State Jordan Bachynski, a 7-foot-2 center who leads the Pac-12 in blocked shots.
"Collier did a great job for us tonight returning to the starting lineup," Robinson said. "Our young guys made me proud and they certainly brought us back and gave us a chance. But, we didn't play a full game and I'm disappointed in that."
The Beavers forced the action in the first half and built as much as an eight-point lead at 26-18 on a Collier breakaway slam dunk that energized the 4,796 home fans. But the Beavers went cold the remainder of the half and were outscored 18-4 to fall behind 36-30 at the break.
OSU looked to be out of the game after the Sun Devils raced out to a 52-37 advantage at 14:18 of the second half. Robinson turned to his bench and the young players responded by climbing back to within four points three times, but a pair of turnovers and key missed shots kept the Beavers from getting over the top. ASU took control of the game late to pull away.
"Our young guys brought us back; they got the crowd back and they fought for every inch," Robinson said. "There is a lot of promise in our younger players and I was excited to see that."
Jahil Carson scored 20 points to lead the Sun Devils, while Carrick Felix tallied 18 points and game-high 14 rebounds.
The Beavers conclude a three-game conference-opening homestand when they host No. 4 Arizona at 5 p.m. on Saturday in a nationally-televised contest on ESPNU. The Wildcats will be the first top-5 team to visit Gill Coliseum since Jan. 4, 2007 when No. 1 UCLA came away with a 71-56 win over Oregon State.
