MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Oregon State volleyball team used a multitude of runs to down Oakland, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-19) in the Beavers' 2012 season opener Friday afternoon at Ahearn Fieldhouse. The match was the opener of the Varney Invitational, which also includes UC Irvine and host Kansas State, whom the Beavers will compete against Saturday.
The win pushed the Beavers to their seventh season-opening win under head coach Taras Liskevych, who is now in his eighth season at Oregon State. OSU is 28-9 all-time in season openers.
"It's a very good start to the season," Liskevych said. "I thought we did two things particularly well in the first two sets; we really served the ball well and received serves well. It kept them off track because they had a hard time receiving our serves."
OSU (1-0 overall) tallied runs of at least four points in each of the three sets, including a match-long eight pointer midway through the first set. The Beavers also took 4-0 leads to open both the second and third sets. Oakland, meanwhile, never managed more than two consecutive points.
Camille Saxton led the Beavers with 16 kills, and she was followed by Ashley Eneliko, who tallied six. Allie Rogers and Arica Nassar, meanwhile, posted five apiece. All told, seven different Beavers posted at least one kill in the win.
The Beavers hit .206 as a team compared to .071 for Oakland.
Meghan Bray, Amanda Baker and Brittany Holbrook all led Oakland with six kills.
The Beavers utilized an eight-point run midway through a 25-18 set-one win to take the early advantage. Saxton, Rogers and Laura Schaudt all picked up three kills in the set, but O'Neil provided the early highlights with four consecutive service aces. They helped the Beavers go up 14-8 before Oakland (0-1) ended the run.
O'Neil, thusly, needed just one set to tie a career-high previously reached Sept. 4, 2010 against UNLV.
The Beavers utilized much of the same in the team's second set, jumping out to an 18-8 lead before downing the Golden Grizzlies, 25-15. Oregon State had two four-point runs during the set and was highlighted by Nassar's four kills.
The Beavers hit .267 in the second set after posting a .189 mark in set one. Oakland, meanwhile, finished at .000 in set two after tallying a .200 percentage to open the match.
The start of the third and final set was similar in that OSU jumped out to a 4-0. Oakland, however, was able to stay close and forced the Beavers to take a timeout midway through, holding a 14-11 advantage. OSU never lost the lead, though, and finished off the match with the 25-19 win.
The Beavers continue play at the Varney Invitational Saturday when taking on UC Irvine at 8 a.m. PT (10 a.m. CT) and host Kansas State at 5:30 p.m. PT. The match against the Wildcats can be seen live on KStateHD.TV live for a fee.
